How To Elevate Your Calm Tip #10:

Tip #10: Hang out!

Take time to hang out with friends. It is normal for humans to want to socialize. Hanging out with friends and family makes you feel happy and included in a community.

When you are stressed, we at Calm Up suggest you call up a friend to hang out. Hanging out with someone else, besides yourself, will let you have time to escape your thoughts inside your head. Spending long periods of time alone can let your thoughts take over.

Even a simple phone or FaceTime could work. With the COVID pandemic, socialization has made it harder to connect with loved ones in person. This is where our great technology comes in. Taking 5 minutes out of your hectic day to say hi to a friend can make all the difference in your day. It benefits them as well as yourself. Think about how pleasantly surprised you are when you see an old friend’s name pop up on your phone.

When we socialize it, “increases in levels of a hormone called oxytocin, which functions to decrease anxiety levels and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system calming down responses.” When you have someone to talk to and share your thoughts, it lets us get out of our own heads.

Now go call your old High school friend you've been meaning to connect with.
